But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
Everyone is vulnerable to pain.
Through the past months, no one can deny that it has been part and parcel of our Christian life. No matter who we are, where we reside or what we do, we are definitely vulnerable to it. This is the reality on this fallen earth; pain is an inevitable part of our lives.
We come to the point of physical pain, being, time and time again, burdened by sicknesses and diseases. In such instances, we feel the urgent need to seek medical help in order to prevent our condition from getting worse. But the pain that we experience in life is not only what affects physical body. The truth is, we are also not immune to emotional pain. Though physically strong, we are brought to our knees by the pain that troubles our inner beings. Most of the time, emotional distresses, such as discouragement and hopelessness, turn out to be far weightier burdens to bear.
Yet, in times of physical and emotional pain, we have this unshakable assurance: the Almighty God is our Great Healer. He is always ready and willing to touch every aspect of our lives. With His power, He can touch us and restore our physical bodies. With His love, He can heal our hearts and rekindle our passion for living.
Even as we revel in His readiness and willingness to heal us with His power and love, we must also pause to take in at what cost all that came into being. The Lord of lords, the Creator of this Universe had to suffer horrible pain.
This is the extraordinary reality of our Healer –
He is unlike the doctors to whom we go whenever we feel sick. While our doctors need to ask questions, observe symptoms before they can prescribe the right medicine to make us better, s/he does not necessarily need to experience our particular ailment just to be able to give us advice and prescription. But the Lord? Our Great Healer, the Lord Jesus Christ, suffered everything in order to offer us holistic healing. He did not merely observe the symptoms and handed us a prescription.
To nurse our wounds, His body trembled in agony. To restore our lives, He surrendered Himself to being pierced, crushed and broken. To heal our bodies, He bled unto death. To redeem us, He chose to become a curse there in Calvary. Indeed, there are no words for the dreadful price our Lord Jesus had to pay just to claim the divine healing for our entire beings. Indescribable… and with it came the unspeakable promise of wholeness for each one of us. The powerful words in Isaiah 53:5 enlighten us with this truth, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.”
Hence, in times of physical, emotional or spiritual illness, we must abandon any idea that we are alone in our pain and suffering. Our Great Healer, as He has proven at the cross of Calvary, is one with us in our pain and suffering. Out of His abundant love and mercy towards His creation, He has made known to us the truth of His abiding presence as we walk through the deepest valleys.
With these in our minds and hearts, let us claim the life that He has destined for us, by His wounds, to experience – a life in its fullness, redeemed from the curse of sin and death through Christ Jesus!
